2024 – NATIVITY SCENE – PORTAL RELIEF – ABBEY OF NONANTOLA (MO)
The 2024 collection celebrates one of the most evocative examples of Emilian Romanesque art: the Nativity scene carved into the portal relief of the Abbey of Nonantola, created around 1117 by Wiligelmo and his apprentices, under the commission of Abbot Rodolfo. Situated in the sculptor’s hometown, the Abbey still preserves these masterpieces, which continue to convey a profound sense of sacredness and simplicity.
The relief depicts the moment when Baby Jesus, swaddled in cloth, is placed in the manger, following the Gospel of Luke (2:7):
“She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.”
The composition is framed by two arches adorned with circular floral decorations, guiding the viewer’s gaze to the center of the scene. There, the heads of the ox and the donkey gently touch as they bow toward the Child, who lies in a richly decorated manger. The figures are stylized and devoid of a defined environment, adhering to the symbolic language of Romanesque art, which aimed to convey spiritual meanings rather than realistic depictions.
MariaLuisa, wife of “the Founder” Eugenio Barbieri, has reinterpreted this scene with her distinctive mixed technique of pyrography and oil paints, preserving the linearity and stylization of the original. The result is an essential yet meaningful iconographic image, where the engraved lines evoke the solemnity and purity of the original scene. Subtle colors highlight the decorative details of the arches and the manger, while the ox and the donkey stand out as the silent guardians of the newborn.
This sober and intense representation reflects the values of simplicity and dedication that also lie at the heart of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. Just as the Nativity scene celebrates birth and purity, Balsamic Vinegar is born from simple ingredients that, through time and care, transform into a precious product.
The NONNA Collection 2024 pays homage not only to a masterpiece of Romanesque art but also to the essence of patience and dedication that unites both art and Modenese tradition.
